The Overhill region of Monroe County, Tennessee has been occupied by
people who make things for thousands of years. There are more
than a dozen wonderful galleries within a twenty mile radius of Tellico
Plains, and literally hundreds of top caliber artists in that same
area. Traditional artisans dominate the region with split-oak
basketry, traditional and unique weaving styles (both on and off loom),
incredible woodwork, beautiful pottery, and other types of work while
the fine artists are as varied as they can be anywhere in the world -
from mixed media to traditional oils and acrylics and subject matter
and styles of all sorts. There is a heavy Native American
(specifically Cherokee) influence in the region - you can read more
about the History of the region here
(clicking a link will open a new window).
The Galleries listed above are some of the finest in Tennessee.
Coker Creek Gallery and the
Tellico Arts Center represent many wonderful artists, while the
Stone Cottage Shops and Gardens and the
Weaving Arts Studio
are geared more towards antiques & herbs and fiber arts
(respectively). There are lots of other galleries in the area as
well - here's
another one to look at. They house the work of regionally and
nationally known fine artists and artisans in a beautiful mountain
setting (go here or
here to learn a little more about the area).
If you'd like to come visit, there are plenty
of wonderful places to stay ranging from private quaint to elegant
cabins to great little
bed and
breakfasts.
